CONCERT: CELEBRATING FRENCH MUSIC, THE HISTORY MAKERS, THE HISTORY CHANGERS, 6:00-8:00PM, THE FRANCO CENTER

Presented by The Bates Department of Music, the USM Osher School of Music and the Franco Center: We are happy to announce our first collaborative program between Bates and USM as leaders in arts scholarship. The program, “Celebrating French Music, the History Makers, the History Changers,” highlights the lives and music and struggle for freedom of French women who have been forgotten in history. In honor of those who passed away after the tragedy in Lewiston this October, the program will conclude with Fauré’s Requiem. In collaboration, friends, colleagues, and students from Bates College and University of Southern Maine will come together to sing the Requiem as a musical memorial.

CONCERT: DHARMA DOWN, MIDDLE EASTERN INSPIRED JAZZ, 7:30-9:00PM, OLIN CONCERT HALL

Presented by The Bates Department of Music: Drawing on their eclectic backgrounds and individual passions, Dharma Down brings together a cohesive adventure through music from past to present, local to global, but always in the here and now. Playing music from the across jazz compendium, the great American songbook, influences from traditional klezmer and eastern music, plus original compositions.

Please join Accademia dell’Arte representatives, Samuel Mcgehee (Theatre, Devising Pedagogic Coordinator) and Alessio Trevisani, (Dance, Program Coordinator) for lunch and/or a workshop.

The Accademia dell'Arte provides an intensive period of training, studying, and performing in Italy for students currently studying and training in theatre, vocal arts, and dance. Students experience the marvelous tapestry of Italian culture while gaining insight and experience in the world of European performing arts. They offer two options for abroad semesters for Physical Theater and Dance.

GROUP DISCUSSION: NIGHT OF THE LIVING REZ BY MORGAN TALTY, 6:00-7:00PM, BATES MUSEUM OF ART

To support a campus-wide community read of Morgan Talty's debut story collection, 100 copies have been made available by the Office of Equity and inclusion and the Dean of Faculty's Office! A group discussion will be lead by Rhetoric, Screen and Film Studies faculty Stephanie Kelley-Romano on the 25th, preceding Talty's Literary Arts Live event on April 4th. Come listen, discuss and see the museum's exhibitions on their last day (see below)!

THEATER PRODUCTION OPENING NIGHT: THE GRAVEDIGGERS UNION, SCHAEFFER THEATRE

A colorful collection of gravediggers at a New Hampshire cemetery are suddenly at risk of losing their livelihoods when the Walmart of cemeteries opens just across the street. Faced with the possible loss of their dysfunctional but comforting existence, they do what most people would do in this circumstance, they try to buy their graveyard by putting on a play to raise money. What could go wrong?

The Bates Winter Arts Festival is a student-curated celebration of the College’s arts scene. This year’s event is Friday, March 8 in Olin Arts Center from 5-9pm and the entire community is cordially invited to attend! Details of participants forthcoming.

SENIOR RECITAL: ELI CUSHNER, CELLIST

Presented by The Bates Department of Music: Eli Kushner ’24, a student of Christina Chute (Bates Faculty), presents his senior recital in cello performance. He will perform work by Rachmoninoff, Shostakovich, Prokofiev and more. The program will include works for solo cello, cello and piano (performed by Chiharu Naruse, Bates Faculty) as well as string quartet of assembled local professionals.

MUSEUM LECTURE: PROFESSOR TRIAN NGUYEN ON THE MUSEUM'S YAO SHAMAN ART AND OBJECT COLLECTION, 4:30 PM, OLIN 104

Please join us for a lecture from Art and Visual Culture and Asian Studies Professor Trian Nguyen. Nguyen will lecture on his research of Yao Shaman art and objects in the Bates Museum of Art collection, including the set of 18 paintings, a large ritual robe, ceremonial wooden and paper masks, and several instruments used by Yao-Daoist shamanic priests in their traditional rituals. This research is part of his current book project on the Yao cultural and religious artifacts.

ART WORKSHOP: PYSANKY EGG DECORATING WITH ARTIST LESIA SOCHOR

The Bates College Museum of Art will host two Ukrainian egg decorating workshops with Lesia Sochor on Friday, March 15th, at the Benjamin Mays Center. There will be two sessions, one at 10:00 AM and the other at 1:30 PM.

The workshop is free for Bates students and $10 per person for other community members. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

CONCERT: KRISTINA KOLLER, A MODERN TAKE ON THE MUSIC OF COLE PORTER, 7:30-9:00 PM, OLIN CONCERT HALL

Presented by The Bates Department of Music: Jazz artist Kristina Koller will be presenting her unique musical arrangements of one of her all time favorite Great American Songbook composers, Cole Porter. Ranging from his well known compositions such as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “Just One of Those Things” to a repertoire of never recorded tunes. Porter was known for his bold choices. What better way to honor his boldness then with arrangements that bring out the music in a new, contemporary way.

SENIOR PERFORMANCE: EL PRÓXIMO TREN, 7:30PM, VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Devised and Directed by Miguel Ángel Pacheco ’24

How do you remember something that’s lost? If we don’t retrieve these parts of ourselves can we become invisible or forgotten?

Is it a part of ourselves that disappears or our whole being? El Próximo Tren, is a devised theatre piece that intends to function as a laboratory to inquire, movement, losing and finding. To approach the concept of human migration and the meeting and missing of one’s place.

This laboratory intends to invite people from all sorts of disciplines and backgrounds for a physical creative process. It is a place to research and create together. The project is carried by Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance major Miguel Ángel Pacheco 24’ from Venezuela.
