WRBC HALLOWEEN BASH, 10PM - 1AM, GILLESPIE HALL BASEMENT

Fun event with bands and DJs. Come one come all to Gillespie Basement for dancing and a great time. The event is Friday, November 3rd, in the Gillespie Basement from 10 PM - 1 AM.

NOVEMBER 4

EMBODIED WORKSHOPS WITH MIGUEL, 11AM - 1PM, SKELETON LOUNGE IN CHASE HALL

Physical explorations through sounds, movement and images. Open to all skill levels, backgrounds, everyone. Part of research in Interdisciplinary Studies thesis in Theater, Dance and Art & Visual Culture.

NOVEMBER 5

ACE+ DANCE WORKSHOP - BEGINNER FRIENDLY, 1 - 2:30PM, MARCY PLAVIN DANCE STUDIO (MERRILL GYMNASIUM)

ACE+ will lead a 90min long dance workshop that composed basic hiphop movements tutorial and we will teach a basic hiphop choreography.

LITERARY ARTS LIVE WITH POET BRIAN BRODEUR, 4:30 - 5:30PM, PETTENGILL G52

Brian Brodeur is the author of four poetry collections, most recently Some Problems with Autobiography (2023), which won the 2022 New Criterion Prize. He has won several national poetry prizes, including a Walter E. Dakin Fellowship in Poetry from the Sewanee Writers Conference (2023); Times Literary Supplement Mick Imlah Poetry Prize (2018); Meringoff Writing Award for Poetry through the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers (2022); Able Muse Write Prize for Poetry (2022); Kim Bridgford Memorial Sonnet Prize (2023); and the Frost Farm Prize for Metrical Poetry (2023). Recent poems and criticism appear in American Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, The Hopkins Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, The New Criterion, The Southern Review, and The Writer’s Chronicle. Brodeur is Associate Professor of English and Poetry at Indiana University East.

ARTIST LECTURE: INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST ELISA HARKINS, 6 - 7PM, OLIN ARTS CENTER 104

Please join us for a lecture from artist and composer Elisa Harkins. Harkins makes innovative, interdisciplinary, and multimedia work in performance, electronic music, and sculpture. Her work is concerned with translation and transformation–preserving, exploring, and sharing Indigenous language and music. Her lecture is part of the programming for the Exploding Native Inevitable exhibition, which includes examples of her work.

THE THANKSGIVING PLAY BY LARISSA FASTHORSE, GANNETT THEATER

Good intentions. Bad decisions. Great fun. In Larissa FastHorse’s satirical comedy The Thanksgiving Play, a troupe of really well-meaning theater artists dream of creating something revolutionary: a culturally sensitive, totally inoffensive Thanksgiving school pageant that finally gives a voice to Native Americans. Finding said Native Americans… isn’t so simple. And that’s when things start to get absurd. Sending up a whole feast of social issues, this bitingly funny play roasts everything right, wrong, and woke in America. Click here for more information.

SCREENING: CHANGING THE GAME, 7 - 9PM, OLIN ARTS CENTER 104

Join Athletics and LGBTQ+ Programs at Bates for a film Screening of the documentary: "Changing the Game" (2019) that highlights the experiences of "transgender high school athletes from across the country as they compete at the top of their fields, while also challenging the boundaries and perceptions of fairness and discrimination."

100 WAYS TO CROSS THE BORDER, 7PM, OLIN ARTS CENTER 104

A daring, self-reflexive performative documentary on the extraordinary Mexican/Chicanx performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s 40-year career of radical artistic practice alongside his international troupe La Pocha Nostra. At a time when the mainstream media is filled with demonizing stories about the US–Mexico border, the film presents the philosophical frameworks of an artist with a sustained dedication to highly impactful, innovative artistic interventions on that border, and presents a unique portrait of his beloved troupe La Pocha Nostra on the road for three years. Featuring exclusive footage from his personal archive, Gómez-Peña enacts his artistic interventions by reclaiming and “queering the border” as a laboratory for utopian ideas and artistic experimentation.
