We are excited to announce the repertory artists for Winter 2025, curated by the Bates Dance Festival: Christina Robson, Lisa 'MONALISA' Berman and Joe 'MN Joe' Tran of BRKFST Dance Company, and Gesel Mason. Alongside Assistant Professor Tristan Koepke, these artists-in-residence will engage with students throughout the Winter semester in the Dance Repertory & Repertory Styles courses and bring their dynamic works to the stage for the Marcy Plavin Spring Dance Concert, presented by the Bates Dance Festival and Department of Theater and Dance.

Christina Robson

CHRISTINA ROBSON (she/her) is a performer, educator and choreographer from Boston, Massachusetts. Her performance career includes Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, David Dorfman Dance, Sean Curran Company, Monica Bill Barnes & Co, Third Rail Projects, Alexandra Beller and others. Christina is currently working on performance projects with artists such as Lisa Race, Kendra Portier, Heidi Henderson and Betsy Miller. Robson was recently awarded the 2024 Choreographic Excellence Award from the American College Dance Association and she was selected as a 2025 co-presentation artist at Dance Place in Washington, DC. She holds an MFA from University of Maryland and is currently on full time faculty at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

BRFST Dance Company

LISA 'MONALISA' BERMAN is the Co-Founder / Co-Artistic Director of BRKFST Dance Company. She is the recipient of the 2019 Artist Initiative Grant producing Dreamers, an experimental dance film choreographed and performed by members of BRKFST and chosen as official selection in 11 international film festivals, 2016 McKnight Dancer Fellowship and 2008 Jerome Travel and Study Grant. Alongside BRKFST, Berman has worked with dancers teaching breaking technique, setting repertoire and original choreographic works at Princeton University in New Jersey, University of Akron in Ohio, Bates Dance Festival in Maine, Dance2Connect Hip Hop Festival in Dublin, Ireland and Winona State University, The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Carleton College, St. Olaf College and Hamline University in Minnesota. As a solo performance artist and with BRKFST Dance Company, Berman has toured nationally and internationally performing in Minnesota, Connecticut, Florida, Washington DC, New York, Wisconsin, Iowa, the Netherlands and Ireland.


JOSEPH ‘MN JOE’ TRAN is the Co-Founder / Co-Artistic Director of BRKFST Dance Company and has been a professional breaker since 2005. Tran is the recipient of the 2023 Jerome Hill Fellowship and 2019 McKnight Dancer Fellowship. Known for his uniquely intricate, non-traditional methods of movement and signatures, he has accumulated multiple first place victories in breaking competitions across the US, Europe and South America. He has worked as a dancer and choreographer for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves “First Avenue Breakers.” With BRKFST, Tran has premiered and toured work nationally and internationally in Minnesota, Iowa, Connecticut, Wisconsin and Ireland. He has also taught breaking technique, BRKFST methodology and set repertoire and original work on students at Princeton University NJ, University of Akron, OH Bates Dance Festival ME, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and Winona State University, St. Olaf and Carleton College in Minnesota.

Gesel Mason

GESEL MASON  is a choreographer, performer, educator, and arts facilitator. She is Artistic Director for Gesel Mason Performance Projects and Associate Professor of Dance and Choreography at the University of Texas at Austin. Her company, Gesel Mason Performance Projects (GMPP), serves as a medium for her creative work. GMPP is a project based dance company that seeks to create meaningful, relevant, and compelling art events as a way to encourage compassion and inquiry. In her work, Mason utilizes dance, theater, humor, and storytelling to bring visibility to voices unheard, situations neglected, or perspectives considered taboo.
