Varvara, a solo work by Jenna Riegel, is inspired by the life and creative work of Russian Constructivist artist, Varvara Stepanova. Konstantin Rudnitsky wrote, “The human body was perceived as a machine: man had to learn to control that machine. It was the theatre’s function to demonstrate the fine-tuning of the human ‘mechanisms.’” Varvara comments on this Constructivist view of theatre's function by exploring the body’s reaction to considering it as a mechanization versus allowing it to be its own chaotic mess of expression. The work weaves together the worlds of Stepanova and Riegel through an interplay of what is real and what is imagined.

Lo Que Se Rompe, Brilla is a dance performance exploring transformation through rupture. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi—the art of mending broken pottery with gold—the piece embraces fracture as a catalyst for radiance. Rather than concealing damage, it highlights it as history, resilience, and beauty. This work charts an emotional and physical journey from containment to self-illumination. Through movement, projection, and bilingual poetic elements, the piece investigates the power of vulnerability, the dualities of identity, and the tension between hiding and being seen. The body becomes both canvas and storyteller, revealing how breaking can be an act of becoming.

Celebrating the legacy of Marcy Plavin, the founder of the Bates College dance program, this concert features original choreographies by nationally renowned Bates Dance Festival artists-in-residence. Student artists engage with the choreographers throughout the Winter semester in the Dance Repertory & Repertory Styles courses and bring their dynamic works to the stage. Each repertory artist’s diverse way of moving and creating art empowers student artists to expand their definition of dance as a powerful mode of artistic expression.
