INDIGENOUS AMERICANS IN ENTERTAINMENT: GIVING VOICE TO A NEW GENERATION WITH JOHN BEAR MITCHELL, 4:15PM, PETTENGILL G52

John Bear Mitchell teaches Native Studies and Wabanaki Studies at the University of Maine in Orono. He has also worked as an actor and storyteller and has also consulted on a variety of productions on the stage and screen. Co-sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology, History, and Theater and Dance.

BATES ARTS COLLABORTIVE

GEOGRAPHIES OF SOLITUDE is an immersion into the rich ecosystem of Sable Island, guided by

naturalist and environmentalist Zoe Lucas who has lived over 40 years on this remote sliver of land in

the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. Shot on 16mm and created using a scope of innovative eco-friendly

filmmaking techniques, this feature-length experimental documentary is a playful and reverent

collaboration with the natural world. The intangible is evoked with hidden sounds and vanishing

light. Much like a field book, the film tracks its protagonist's labor to collect, clean and document marine litter that persistently washes up on the island shores.

LITERARY ARTS LIVE: POET PATRICIA SPEARS JONES, 7PM, MUSKIE ARCHIVES 201

Arkansas born and raised, and a resident of New York City for more than four decades, Patricia Spears Jones is a poet, educator, cultural activist, and anthologist. She is the author of five poetry collections, including The Beloved Community (Copper Canyon Press 2023) and A Lucent Fire: New & Selected Poems (White Pine Press 2015), and five chapbooks.

Bates Arts Society curates selected student art works in celebration of the inauguration.

EXHIBITION OPENING AND RECEPTION: EXPLODING NATIVE INEVITABLE;
BRAD KAHLHAMER: NOMADIC STUDIO, MAINE CAMP, 5:30PM, BATES MUSEUM OF ART

Exploding Native Inevitable is an exhibition of the work of thirteen contemporary Indigenous artists and one collaborative, accompanied by an ongoing program of dance, film, music, performance, readings, story-telling, and video by Indigenous artists from a land we now call America.

Nomadic Studio, Maine Camp is an exhibition of many of artist and curator Brad Kahlhamer’s sketchbooks, accompanied by a selection of related work. The Nomadic Studio sketchbooks are a pictorial travelogue of sorts, and also a journey through the artist’s imagination and oeuvre.

Mali Obomsawin is a bassist, singer and composer from the Odanak First Nation, she brings her Quartet for a special performance in celebration of the Bates Museum of Art’s opening EXPLODING NATIVE INEVITABLE and will be preceded by a welcoming as well as some video and live performances; Mali’s group will conclude the event.
