December is a short month at Bates, but there are still lots of amazing arts events to catch before the semester ends on the 8th. We hope to see you at some of these, and look forward to sharing more with you in the new year!

ARTS EVENTS

DECEMBER 1

THE FIRST CBB INTERNATIONAL FASHION SHOW, 7 - 9:30PM, MEMORIAL COMMONS

The CBB International Fashion Show is an event that celebrates cultural diversity and identity through the medium of fashion. This event is more than a runway; it's a communal space that applauds the varied backgrounds of our community. It serves as a fund-raiser for the Lewiston community, emphasizing the spirit of giving and community support. The International Club, along with various campus organizations, hosts this vibrant fashion extravaganza, inviting participation from all corners of the campus to create a night of inclusive celebration. CONCERTED CONTRASTS, 7:30PM, OLIN CONCERT HALL

A diverse chamber music program featuring violinist Robert Lehmann with members of the Portland Symphony Orchestra and Bates Music faculty. Works include a piece by award winning composer, Daniel Sonenberg, and the Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet by Chausson. Learn More.

DECEMBER 2 - 4

BATES FALL DANCE CONCERT, SCHAEFFER THEATRE

Saturday, December 2nd at 5:00pm
Sunday, December 3rd at 2:00pm
Monday, December 4th at 7:30pm

This concert is primarily comprised of student compositions made in the Advanced Composition Seminar. Additionally, work of Dance Majors’ Thesis and Independent Studies are showcased in a fully supported production on Schaeffer stage. Student choreographers cast their pieces in the beginning of the Fall Term and conduct a semester long rehearsal process, complete with showings, feedback and collaboration with designers, all leading up to the performance. A tremendous amount of effort is poured into these works of art from student artists all across campus. Learn more.

BATES COLLEGE GAMELAN, 3PM, OLIN CONCERT HALL

A mix of contemporary and traditional music for Sundanese and Javanese gamelan, with guest cellist Christina Chute. Learn More.

DECEMBER 4

BATES PIANO RECITAL, 7:30PM, OLIN CONCERT HALL

The intermediate to advanced piano students of Chiharu Naruse and Bridget Convey Bates’s intermediate to advanced piano students will perform beautiful solo works by Beethoven, Burgmüller, Chopin, Granados, Schumann, Liszt, Respighi and Rachmaninoff. THEATER AND DANCE: FALL 2023 SEMESTER SHOWINGS, VARIOUS TIMES AND LOCALES

A series of public events to see what our students have been working on during their fall semester! Includes performances from the following classes: DANC 270I Improv, THEA 240 Playwriting, THEA 261 Acting, THEA 362 Advanced Acting, THEA 263 Voice and Speech, and DANC 270G Ensemble. BATES COLLEGE JAZZ BAND, 7:30PM, OLIN CONCERT HALL

The Bates Jazz Band will feature the works of Duke Ellington, Sammy Nestico, and other modern arrangers. Learn more.

DECEMBER 6

MUSEUM ART CAFE, 5:00 PM, MUSEUM OF ART

In collaboration with the Ronj and the Bates Arts Society, the Museum of Art is proud to introduce the Museum Art Café! Come on down to the Museum to make fun art with your friends, to enjoy delicious coffee from the Ronj and cookies from Bates dining, and to check out our current exhibitions. IMMERSIVE MEDIA STUDIO & IMPACT21st: FACULTY & STAFF OPEN HOUSE, 4:30 - 6PM, CORAM LIBRARY

All Bates Faculty & Staff are invited to celebrate the opening of the new Immersive Media Studio which is part of the new IMPACT21st (Innovation, Media, Process, Arts, Collaboration & Technology in the 21st Century) grant. Come check out the first MULTIMEDIA IMMERSIVE COLLABORATION in the IM STUDIO WITH MICHEL DOGE, CAROLINA VALENCIA GONZALEZ, TRISTAN KOEPKE, AND ASHA TAMIRISA called BEYOND MIDNIGHT (a work in progress). You can interact with the latest technologies, learn about ways to incorporate this into your courses and share some fine food and drink. Learn more.

LITERARY ARTS LIVE: PATRICIA SPEARS JONES, 6 - 7PM, MUSKIE ARCHIVES

Arkansas born and raised, and a resident of New York City for more than four decades, Patricia Spears Jones is a poet, educator, cultural activist, and anthologist. She is the author of five poetry collections, including The Beloved Community (Copper Canyon Press 2023) and A Lucent Fire: New & Selected Poems (White Pine Press 2015), and five chapbooks. AVC OPEN STUDIO NIGHT, 6 - 8PM, OLIN ARTS CENTER 

Come enjoy some chai and cookies while looking at the work of the fall semester studio art students in the Olin hallways. The Senior Thesis candidates will have their studio doors open wide for all to come and engage.
